Given the recent threads focusing on the possible horribleness of Bendis, I thought a look at peoples favorite writers would be informative.
My top three are:
1) Kurt Busiek (Thunderbolts, Marvels, Astro City, Red Tornado)
2) Mark Waid (Kingdom Come, Fantastic Four, Captain America, Impulse, JLA, Sigil)
3) Peter David (Incredible Hulk, Young Justice, X-Factor)
Kurt Busiek will be my favorite always just because of Thunderbolts, volume 1 (1-81) is my favorite comic of all time. Tack on to that the comic responsible for bringing back painted comics (Marvels), and the best creator owned comic of all time (Astro City) and you have a very accomplished career.
Mark Waid's run on Fantastic Four was simply amazing. He really understood the idea of these four heroes as a family and not just a team. It's also interesting to note, that his run on Captain America was so good it pulled the book so far out of purgatory, the people didn't understand why Captain America was one of the heroes that would be included in the Heroes Reborn series.
While Young Justice and X-Factor are examples that stand alone on why Peter David is a great writer, his run on Incredible Hulk will always be the crown jewel of his career. For 12 years he not only made Hulk a must buy, but explored so much of the Hulk's multiple personalities (Savage Hulk, Gray Hulk, Merged Hulk, Joe Fixit).
