Loki Full Review Idea Thread [HUGE Update 5/23/16]

I love making these threads. I’m full of ideas for current heroes and for new ones. Loki was one of my favorites in the game at one point, and I really just love him as a character in general.

Loki needs a rework, not a QoL update.

Loki is certainly in an odd place right now. Some people say he is awesome and doing very well. But, that’s only those people that do summon builds. Yes, his summon build is in a very good place and is very powerful. But what many of those people are forgetting is that Loki has two other trees that are near useless; Son of Jotunheim and Master Sorcerer.

Those two trees were good at one point in time, when he was first released and the months following, but it’s been two years now since then and he is one of the most outdated characters in game. All of his ranged and area powers are clunky and outdated. Loki needs to be smoothed up like Emma Frost’s powers were.

I know not everyone will agree with my views and opinions on each power, but that’s okay. I would love feedback on whether you think these are good ideas or not, or ideas you’d like to contribute to this idea of a rework or any other ideas you may have for Loki.

This potential review of Loki would be a huge undertaking but would make him extremely versatile and fun to play.

Notes:
- The Son of Jotunheim tree has been renamed to Strength of the Realms
- Glacial Shard removed - This is an alright basic with a great attack speed, but Loki doesn’t need three basic powers. This is also the least used of his basic powers from what I know.
- Frost Armor removed - This has a very outdated mechanic for a power and should simply be removed. I know not one person who has ever used this power.
- Cold Snap removed - This power is situational and doesn’t really need to stay to make room for other powers. Remove Cold Snap.
- Changed Permafrost Spikes to Permafrost Spike. This has a completely new animation and different mechanic.
- New power Strikes of Laevatienn
- New power The Light of Alfheim
- New power The Darkness of Svartalfheim
- New power Spirits of the Dead
- New power The Eternal Flame
- Changed the name of Jotun Blood to Asgardian-Jotun Blood
- New power Arcane Lightning
- New power Spell of Serpents
- Arcane Shield has been removed and melded into Master Sorcerer
- Lay Waste has an all new mechanic and purpose
- Several powers will be unlocked at different levels
- Bouncing Bolt is the new ranged basic power
- New Power Illusionary Idle
- Spirits of the Dead and Illusionary Idle cannot be used at the same time
- The Light of Alfheim and Meteoric Illusion share a cooldown
- The Eternal Flame, Spell of Serpents, and Arcane Ruin share a cooldown
- Arcane Illusion has a new purpose


Ultimate

The Norn Stones

Area

Unleash the power of The Norn Stones in your hand, creating a large cloud of magic that weakens and decimates enemies while providing you and your allies with augmented health and power.

  • Mental Damage twice per second
  • Enemies become weakened, dealing 50% less damage
  • You and your allies gain 100% health and 100% damage rating
  • Duration: 20 seconds
  • Cooldown: 10 minutes

Loki has used the Norn Stones a lot in the comics and when he has appeared in cartoons. I thought that it would fit well for an ultimate.


The Son of Jotunheim tree needs to be completely changed. Lore wise, Loki does not use his powers like this and does wish to be so much affiliated with the Frost Giants. This tree only has a couple decent powers in it. The whole tree can be changed to a second sorcery tree of sorts.

I have thought about a name, and I think Strength of the Realms could fit nicely. It would include more of his sorcery talents connecting to the nine realms. I think it’s far more plausible than what is currently the Son of Jotunheim tree. It would include magic from several different realms, not just Jotunheim.


Strength of the Realms

Strikes of Laevateinn

Melee

Strike enemies with strategic swipes of your magical sword Laevateinn.

  • Mental Damage
  • Each consecutive strike increases base damage by 5%
  • Attack Speed: 2.0
  • Spirit Cost: 14
  • When you have points in Laevateinn, all of Loki's magic based powers switch from ranged to melee.

Unlocks at level 2

This will be a new melee spirit spender for those players that want to play Loki as melee. This will only work if the Sword is toggled on in Master Sorcerer. It will prevent you from using The Darkness of Svartalfheim


Permafrost Spike

Ranged, Area

Using ice magic from Jotunheim, create a giant spire of ice that erupts from the ground pierces through enemies into the air, knocking them down.

Melee, Area

Using ice magic from Jotunheim, create a spike of ice from your sword that pierces through enemies and knocks them down.

  • Mental Damage
  • Knockdown Duration: 1.2 seconds
  • Attack Speed: 1.0
  • Spirit Cost: 25

Unlocks at level 3


Asgardian-Jotun Blood

Passive

Loki's unique hybrid Asgardian and Jotun physique gives him enhanced stamina and durability, allowing him to last longer in battle without fatigue.

  • Defense Rating
  • Total Defense Rating: 25%
  • Dodge Rating
  • Total Dodge Rating: 25%
  • Health regeneration per second
  • Maximum Health
  • Maximum Spirit
  • Tenacity
  • Damage Negation: 8%

Unlocks at level 4

Jotun Blood is okay for a passive, but the spirit from Master Sorcerer makes more sense to put here. Adding health regeneration per second is a smart idea too. Renaming it to Asgardian-Jotun Blood adds another layer to the Strength of the Realms. Asgard isn't mentioned in any other powers, so I thought it best to include it in the passive. The Dodge affix from Lord of Deception will be transferred here.


The Light of Alfheim

Ranged (Melee), Area

Use the light magic of Alfheim to distract enemies and disrupt their minds; stunning them.

  • Mental damage
  • Spirit Cost: 22
  • Stun duration (irresistible): 1.2 seconds
  • Cooldown: 4 seconds (shared with Meteoric Illusion)

Unlocks at level 8

I imagine this power to be a bright white/golden burst of light in a target location. It would be a burst of bright light. When it changes to a melee power, the light bursts from Loki's sword rather than a targeted location.


The Darkness of Svartalfheim

Ranged, Area

Unleash beams of magic from The Dark World from your hands and staff, blinding and piercing enemies they hit in magical beams of darkness.

  • Mental damage
  • Each spell that uses magic from other realms increase damage by 10%
  • Rate of Fire: 2.0 per second
  • Spirit Cost: 10

Unlocks at level 14

This is a new spirit spender power that is based on dark magic from the realm of Svartalfheim. Using other powers in this tree on the target will increase the damage of this power by 10%. I imagine the color of it to be purple and black, like the gifs below. It could also be red or it could be green and black.


Winter's Breath

Ranged, Area

Connected to the frozen wastes of Niffleheim, the world of cold and darkness, Loki can create a cascade of frost from his hands and chill enemies.

Melee, Area

Connected to the frozen wastes of Niffleheim, the world of cold and darkness, Loki can create a cascade of frost from his sword and chill enemies.

  • Mental Damage twice per second
  • Ongoing Spirit Cost: 12 per second
  • Slow: 40% reduced move/attack Speed for 5 seconds

Unlocks at level 22

The damage on this power needs to be doubled at least. Its atrocious how little damage it does compared to other similar powers. It also currently has a very short range, and I think its range should be absolutely doubled; look at Magneto's Magnetic Tempest. Then when it changes to a melee power, the range will be what it currently is and be tagged as melee.


Spirits of the Dead

Ranged (Melee), Area

Summon spirits from the world of Hel, the realm ruled by Loki’s daughter Hela, to destroy enemies.

  • Mental Damage per hit
  • Spirit Cost: 25
  • Weaken: Enemies take 10% less damage for 10 seconds
  • Duration: 8 seconds
  • Can maintain one area
  • Cannot be used at the same time as Illusionary Idle

Unlocks at level 26

This is not a summon power, merely a power similar to Scarlet Witch's Beasts From Beyond On. I also imagine this power being purple and black for some reason, but it could easily be green with the rest of his magic. If it were to be purple though I think it would add more color to his powers and represent magic better, just like Strange’s powers are all sorts of colors. When it changes to a melee power, the spirits stay around Loki as you movie rather than being in a targeted location.


Unyielding Power

Area, Signature

Focus your godlike powers, strengthening your attacks and fortitude.

  • Mental Damage twice per second
  • Damage Bonus
  • Defense Bonus
  • Immune to Crowd Control
  • Duration: 10 seconds
  • Cooldown: 40 seconds

Unlocks at level 30

Rather than having this as a frost power, change it to magic and change the animation from frost to his green magic. It can have the same mechanic and visual, but just change it so it’s more lore appropriate for Loki by changing the frost/ice magic to green magic. Increase the duration to ten seconds and the damage on this should also be increased slightly.


The Eternal Flame

Ranged, Area

Conjure up a mere fraction of the Eternal Flame of Muspelheim to devastate enemies with a large column of fire at a targeted location and empowering you and your allies.

Melee

Plunge your sword into the ground creating a portal to Muspelheim that erupts flame from the ground around you, devastating your enemies and empowering you and your allies.

  • Mental Damage
  • Spirit Cost: 30
  • You and allies gain XXX Damage rating 6 seconds
  • Each enemy affected replenishes 5 spirit
  • Cooldown: 12 seconds (shared with Spell of Serpents and Arcane Ruin)

Unlocks at level 47

This is a burst of magical fire summoned from Muspelheim. The Eternal Flame can empower the wielder; Loki and his allies gain XXX damage and defense rating for a short time.
