Shortly before Iron Fist was released, the devs relieved him from his post as healer in Avengers Tower. So my inquiry is, what about all of the other NPCs who have become playable?

** On the subject of Fury, I have an idea to alleviate the impending continuity discrepancy. When Fury is released, the NPC becomes a hologram in the helicarrier and the toolshed. During the Invaded Helicarrier arc, he could be solid since it's the Skrull impersonator.
